This additional feature allows prescriptions to be electronically written within the client record, based on existing medication records, and optionally, faxed to the pharmacy of your choice to be filled.
The Prescription Writer can be enabled for your agency at your admin's request. Reach out to your account manager to discuss adding it to your EMHware subscription today!

How to Create Prescriptions in EMHware
The Prescription Writer fields populate from a case data form. EMHware's default case data should have all the fields required to fill a prescription as per regulations. For a custom print or PDF format, admins can reach out to their account manager for more information.
- Once the Prescription Writer is enabled, any applicable staff will require the "Print - Clients > Medication > Prescription Writer" role permission to access the Prescription Writer in client records.
- There is an optional configuration setting to automatically send completed prescriptions. It will be defaulted to OFF unless requested to be enabled.
After navigating to the client record:
- Select Client Menu → Medication → Prescription Writer.
- The Prescription Writer will open in a new browser window, displaying the Prescription Search screen for the client. Any existing prescription records can be found here and viewed.
- To create a prescription, select New.
- The window will redirect to create a new prescription. Update Prescription Date as needed. Optionally enter a Prescription Expiry Date, and select the applicable Program.
The Prescription Writer case data has five sections, with many fields set to auto-populate based on data from the client's record. The fields on the prescription can be updated as needed.-
Client Information auto-populates from the client's dataset.
-
Pharmacy Information will auto-populate if the Filled By fields are completed for a medication in the client record. Or populate the pharmacy details from the agency address book by selecting the address book icon beside Select Pharmacy. A pop-up window will open to search and select the applicable pharmacy.
-
Allergies will auto-populate from the allergy section of the client menu.
-
Medication Information requires the worker to choose a medication from the Select Client Medication dropdown, which populates based on the medications in the client record. Once selected, the Rx field will populate based on the medication details in the client record. Select Add Medication Information as applicable to request refills for other medications.
-
Prescriber Information - The Prescriber, Phone, Email, and Address will populate if the Prescriber fields are completed for a medication in the client record. Or populate the Prescriber details from the agency address book by selecting the address book icon beside Select Prescriber. A pop-up window will open to search and select the applicable prescriber.
The Prescriber's Signature and Registration # are required to be completed by the prescribing healthcare professional when creating the prescription.

- Once all required fields have been completed, select
located in the top right corner to save the prescription form. A pop-up window opens for the user to preview the prescription. At this point, changes can still be made in the previous window. Re-select Write Prescription to save any changes and review again.
- To complete the prescription process, select Complete Prescription. The prescription is faxed to the pharmacy when the config is ON for automatically sending completed prescriptions and a fax number has been provided.
- If the fax process is successful (fax sent or config OFF or no fax number), the case data is authenticated (locked), then a PDF version is saved in the client's attachments and opened on the screen for the user.
- A copy of the Prescription Writer case data form will also be accessible in the Case Data section of the client record.
- If the prescription was sent, a header showing that the prescription has been sent, with the date, the time, and the worker/prescriber the prescription was sent by, is inserted in the PDF.
- If the prescription was not sent, users can use the displayed PDF to send the prescription with their method of choice.
- At this point, the prescription is no longer editable in the Prescription Writer. If the fax was not sent, the case data can be unlocked in the global or client file case data. Then the prescription can be resent by navigating back to: Client Menu → Medication → select Prescription Writer → Prescription Search.
In the Prescription Search Results, select a non-authenticated case data to continue or edit a prescription. When the prescription is correct, use the Write Prescription button → then the Complete Prescription button as outlined in steps 5 and 6 above.
